Connecting an underground mine to an open cut operation in the Bowen Basin.

Problem:

An open cut mine in the Bowen Basin needed a reliable fibre optic connection to support the development and operation of a new underground mine. The underground site required robust connectivity for multiple systems critical to workforce safety and communication. However, the open cut mine’s neglected infrastructure, combined with minimal documentation of existing systems, complicated the feasibility assessment.

Solution:

Tekko began by conducting an infrastructure discovery and health check, thoroughly documenting the existing infrastructure. Based on this analysis, Tekko designed a comprehensive scope of works tailored to the new underground operation’s needs. This included:

  • Creating a primary connection via underground single-mode fibre and OPGW single-mode fibre connections.
  • Interfacing with pre-terminated fibre already deployed underground.
  • Designing a secondary wireless network link to ensure high availability.

Tekko was then engaged to deliver and commission the new primary and secondary connections.

Result:

The underground mine was successfully connected through reliable primary and secondary links, enabling:

  • Remote monitoring of safety systems.
  • Seamless communication with underground personnel.
  • Remote operation of underground systems, ensuring operational continuity and worker safety.
Tekko’s expertise ensured smooth integration across both mine operations, delivering secure, resilient, and future-proof connectivity.
